John L. Gohres, Sr., founder of Gohres Insurance Agency, Inc., builds a successful agency focused on personal and commercial insurance, with a particular emphasis on heavy industrial and contractor accounts. The Gohres family name becomes synonymous with professional service and expertise, a legacy that continues to this day.

Arthur B. Emery and Donald E. James merges the two oldest insurance agencies in Hammond. Both agencies brought with them legacies dating back to 1902. This union combined decades of experience and expertise, creating a strong foundation for our commitment to serving the community. 

A new chapter unfolds when John L. Gohres, Jr. and Robert J. Gohres acquired and partnered with Emery & James, Ltd. Business is now conducted through the entity Emery & James, Ltd. which also owns and has trademarked the name Gohres Insurance. 

While Emery & James, Ltd. remained the primary operating entity, the Gohres name was retained due to its long-standing reputation within the Greater New Orleans area.

Today, the agency thrives under the leadership of the fourth generation of the Gohres family – Brian and Jace Gohres.

Emery & James, Ltd. has expanded its reach beyond Hammond, establishing offices in Covington and Metairie, Louisiana. However, our core values remain unchanged. We continue to operate as an independent insurance agency, allowing us to partner with a diverse network of national and regional insurance carriers.
